It has just been announced that four airmen from Illinois will be inducted into the Illinois Aviation Hall of Fame. William Coons from Lombard, Arnold Zimmerman from Downers Grove, Rick Weinberg (deceased) from Champaign and Billie Somerville (deceased) from Coal City.
Also, the Spirit of Flight Award has been awarded to the Wasp’s of Illinois. They were the Womens Airforce Service Pilots and they freed hundreds of male pilots for combat duty during World War Two.
The Illinois Aviation Hall of Fame will hold Induction ceremonies and a Banquet on May 19th at the Marriott Chicago in Schaumburg honoring the inductees.
Induction into the Aviation Hall of Fame is the highest honor that can be attained by individuals whose principal aviation activity and experience is Illinois based. All have been recognized for their good character and excellence over a period of time and their volunteer efforts within the aviation community.
Each inductee will be receiving an award in conjunction with the Illinois Aviation Conference held at the Marriott Chicago in Schaumburg on May 18th and 19th.
